More than 20 million years ago, the climate in Lesbos was more humid than now, and the island was covered with dense subtropical forests. Here grew the ancestors of modern laurels, as well as evergreen sequoias.
However, the nearby active volcano covered a beautiful thick forest with a thick layer of ash. Through this blanket, water penetrated into the trees, rich in silicon and other minerals, which gradually replaced living wood with stone deposits.
Thanks to this, millions of years ago, the trees seemed to be preserved and perfectly preserved to our days, and since 1985 they have been protected by the national park.

A unique historical monument - the petrified forest of Lesbos - is located in the western part of the island and covers an area of about 150 km2.
