    PALMERAL - PALM GROVES AROUND THE CITY ELCHE.

   The palmeral Elche is about 200 thousand palm trees. Some palms are shaggy and require immediate haircut, others are skillfully circumcised and well-groomed, each about 250 years of age. 

   These trees turn the center of a lively industrial city into a blooming oasis. Date palms along irrigation canals, taking water from the Vinalopo River, and a carefully thought-out irrigation system - inventions of the late 10th century, when the Arabs dominated the greater part of the Iberian peninsula. At the same time, the Muslim city of Elche appeared. 

   However, the breeding of date palms in this region is known since the time of the Iberians (from the 5th century BC). 

   The plantation survived the times of the Romans and the Moors. Arab technology for agricultural production in a dry climate for Europe is unique.

then a bus to the city of Elche - about 10 €, 2 hours.
